March Gardening Tips
Spring has almost arrived, and we could not be more excited. Before you know it, you will be in your yard in shorts and a t-shirt, soaking in the sun while playing in your garden! But don’t be so quick to push through March just to get to April. March is a critical month to prep and maintain your yard! Here are some March gardening tips to help you get started!
Fertilize
If you did not fertilize your shade trees in February, do so this month. Also, fertilize all shrubs. It is also a good idea to fertilize any emerging spring bulbs.
Plant it up!
Believe it or not, the best time to plant in our growing zone is September through April/May. Now is the time to plant all shrubs, shade trees, etc.! This time of year, temperatures are mild, and rainfall is steady. Complete your large planting projects now before it gets too hot and dry!
Prune it!
Now is the time to prune fruit trees. Pruning fruit trees will promote healthy and robust branching formation, increase light penetration, and allow air to flow throughout the tree. If you have any overgrown shrubs, you may prune them during March.
Prevent Pests
Some pests don’t show up (at least to our naked eye) until summer hits. But now is the time to beat them! You can still spray fruit trees with dormant oil spray. Also, any shrubs susceptible to scale must be sprayed during March.
